Montana Film Office Update
May 14, 2012
Recent & Upcoming Festivals
The prestigious International Wildlife Film Festival (IWFF), the first and longest running wildlife film festival in the world, just wrapped up in Missoula. The Montana Film Office (MFO) returned as a sponsor for this seven-day film festival that took place in the heart of Montana’s breathtaking Northern Rockies in historic downtown Missoula.
IWFF is known around the world for its emphasis on wildlife conservation and its focus on the role and impact of wildlife, environmental and natural history media have on the fate and future of our world. The theme for the 35th IWFF was Challenge, Choice & Promise in the 21st Century. The theme for the annual festival comes from the Blackfoot Nation’s “troubadour,” singer and songwriter, Jack Gladstone. This year’s festival gave insight on the context and state of our planet — what we can learn about our future and the fate of the natural world and its species/habitats/cultures and how we can save and preserve it.
Each year the festival offers a unique opportunity to screen award winning wildlife films and engage public audiences with filmmaker Q&A; attend panel discussions as well as technology and fundraising workshops; and participate in field trips — all within a welcoming and relaxing environment. The MFO hosted a well-attended Welcome to Montana Filmmakers Reception on Monday evening, May 7, 2012 for registered festival delegates and guests.
Locations Tradeshow Los Angeles, CA June 15-16, 2012
The Montana Film Office will be marketing at the 27th annual AFCI SHOW which will be held at the LA Convention Center on June 15-16 to coincide with the opening weekend of the prestigious Los Angeles Film Festival which is also hosted downtown at LA Live. This event is the premier industry event of the Association of Film Commissioners International. This year is particularly exciting due to the proximity of the LA Film Festival, which is another of the Montana Film Office’s top marketing events. With these events happening at the same time in such close proximity it will expand Montana’s outreach efforts to thousands of filmmakers and producers attending both events. It will be a productive marketing trip for the MFO staff. Montana will have a booth at the trade show, but will also be able to market at the festival.
The AFCI Show is vital for any filmmaker or film industry professional interested in the range of opportunities offered by filming on location. This year it will feature not only exhibits and information booths from the major film production centers nationally and worldwide, but also networking events, workshops, seminars, discussions and presentations, all geared to sharing the most current, dynamic and effective body of knowledge about working on location throughout the world. Content has been curated with the inputs, assistance and guidance of industry partners and thought-leaders.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Montana Film Office is returning to the Los Angeles Film Festival as the sponsor for the Filmmaker’s Reception. This invite-only reception celebrates the filmmakers with projects in this year’s festival and will be held Monday, June 18 from 6p.m.-9p.m. at the Ritz Carlton.
The MFO will also have representatives at the festival to meet with filmmakers from Thursday, June 16 to Tuesday, June 22. If you will be attending the festival and would like to schedule a meeting, please contact us.
Produced by Film Independent , a non-profit arts organization dedicated to promoting and supporting independent films and filmmakers, LAFF has grown into a world-class event, uniting new filmmakers with critics, scholars, film masters and the movie-loving public. Held annually in June, it showcases the best of American and international cinema, drawing over 92,000 attendees. More than 100 feature films—narrative and documentary—are featured in the Festival, alongside gala premieres, panels and seminars, short film programs, music video showcases, free outdoor screenings, live musical performances and unique signature events.
